Oil was considered a waste before people understood what it was. Once people understood the economic potential of oil, it was transformed from unwanted waste into a profitable commodity.
“Data is the new oil”. In the sense that data, which was once perceived as worthless, has become valuable after being “refined” and analyzed.
Data volumes are doubling every two years, and the world should have 1.75 zettabytes (10^21) of data by 2025.
Using data effectively means using data a lot. Consequently, the data ecosystem has boomed.
The Modern Data Stack (MDS) architecture was then developed to maintain high-quality, secure, and compliant data at scale. The suite of tools of the MDS (in the order of how the data flows) can be segmented in:
* Ingestion: a fully managed ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) data pipeline
* Warehousing: a cloud-based warehouse or data lake as a destination
* Transformation: a data transformation tool
* BI: a business intelligence or data visualization platform
Conclusion
Data is a competitive edge, and it has become crystal-clear that data-driven companies will win.
Thus, Fabrica Ventures Fund II is betting on the platforms that will make it happen (and that are facing the best problem any new technology can have: companies want to use it too much!)
We have already made our first MDS investment, through ThoughtSpot / Mode in BI.
And our goal is to have every MDS segment nicely covered by the fund.
